What You Will Visit
San Gimignano
A journey made of ancient towers, city walls, alabaster and bronze sculptures. San Gimignano is a village that still today looks like you are back in the 14th century. Once a strategic location to control the border between the ancient republic of Firenze and the territory of of the republic of Siena, was forgotten when Tuscany was unified as an independent state with Gran Duke Cosimo I in 1557. The village was only rediscovered by tourism in the 1980’s, and still today has its original medieval look made if ancient tower houses, city walls and fortress. A village made of terracotta bricks that still today controls its territory with a 360°view, a true Medieval Manatthan.
Volterra
Volterra on the other hand has a very different look and a very different ring, much older than San Gimignano. Velatrhi was its Etruscan name, which means “the city of winds”, a city made of stones more than bricks, where still today alabaster is the typical material used also for modern works of art. From the oldest Etruscan gate known as Porta all’Arco, we will discover its historical center to learn about its history, origins and to learn more about the ancient civilization of the Etruscans by visiting the Museo Guarnacci, the archeological museum famous for its collection and for the bronze statue know as “l’ombra della sera”, the “shadow of the evening”, today symbol of Volterra.
